BEHIND THE TRACK...

The first part of ‘My Protection’ that came about was the soft marimba melody that opens the tune. We’d been messing around on various different vst’s, trying to come up with something ‘fun’ but not really getting anywhere. Bryn took a short break to hang out some washing (oh the joys of a home studio!) and I started messing around after finding the marimba instrument. Bryn went ‘oh that sounds nice’, to which I said ‘yeah but it’s really depressing, it’s not very fun!’. We decided that that didn’t matter, it stirred an emotion in us and that was the main thing.

The lyrics are about a toxic relationship, the likes of which are, unfortunately, all around us. Two people who care for each other, but their love isn’t a healthy love, it’s too possessive, too fraught, too needy, too violent. They don’t know how to live with each other and they don’t know how to live without. The ‘ribbons of colour’ are alluding to a protection charm that I’d heard about, where you envisage rings of colour wrapping themselves around you, growing stronger and brighter the more you focus on them. This song always stirs up moving memories for me.

BEHIND THE VIDEO...

Filmed on: iPhone 5
Directed by: Heather & Bryn
Edited by: Heather
FX by: Bryn

The video for ‘My Protection’ was filmed in our flat in Brighton. Bryn came up with the concept; that we’d had some sort of an argument during a night out and we were both contemplating our lives, the universe, everything, during the course of the video. We had no idea at this point how the final edit would turn out but we set to work anyway!

We filmed it in a little hallway between the main hall and our second bedroom. We thought it was a plain enough space that wouldn’t be distracting in the video, and it could also look as if we’d been kicked out of another room, in keeping with the video premise. Jem (our gorgeous kitty!) was keeping us company throughout. We each did a few takes and then called it a day. Then came the hard part - editing!

We literally had no idea how we were going to tie the whole thing together. We tried two or three different edit ideas but nothing was working. Every edit seemed a bit too jarring - cutting between the Heather scene and the Bryn scene just didn’t look right. I think part of it was because the space stayed the same but the person changed. It just looked odd.

Then Bryn came up with the idea of the split screen, having both of us on screen at the same time. If we did it right it would look like we were on opposite sides of the same door. Bingo! It worked! We set to work creating an edit for the whole video using this idea. The icing on the cake was the effects that Bryn spent ages on - the lights that change colour and all of the patterns that take over in the second half. Now when I watch it I think that they represent the mess that’s going on in our minds; the friction, the confusion, the breakdown of a relationship. For a video that we had no concept for to begin with, it turned out pretty well!

Lyrics

Twist me
Around your little finger again
Fool me
Believe you never had to pretend
Hold me
Cut me off from the world
Chase me
To the ends of the earth and back
But I want to be free
I want to be free

So I’ll wrap
Myself
In my chrysalis
In my ribbons of colour
And I’ll wrap
Myself
In my chrysalis
My protection
From you

So I’ll wrap
Myself
In my chrysalis
In my ribbons of colour
And I’ll wrap
Myself
In my chrysalis
My protection
From you

Now I’m feeling weak and I still can’t sleep
And it’s haunting me like you’re taunting me
Now it’s clear to me and it’s plain to see
How you treated me how you’re hurting me
And I know it’s true what I’ve got to do
To be free of you though I still love you
But I know it’s right and I’ve got to fight
For me

So I’ll wrap
Myself
In my chrysalis
In my ribbons of colour
And I’ll wrap
Myself
In my chrysalis
My protection
From you

So I’ll wrap
Myself
In my chrysalis
In my ribbons of colour
And I’ll wrap
Myself
In my chrysalis
My protection
From you

I LOVE THIS!
