BEHIND THE TRACK...

‘To The Place’ was a great experience… The Love Tectonic had just come into being - we’d literally decided on the name about a week before in one of those late-night kitchen-table sessions with our friends Elijah & Ava, AKA The Gravity Drive. We were really excited about the new direction our music was going to take, although we had no idea in that moment where it was going to lead us. The first sound that Bryn came up with was that deep, dark throbby sub-pad, together with a beat… all of a sudden I heard this ‘ooh-ooh-ooh-ooooooh’ melody which I just had to record in. That set the tone for everything else.

The lyrics are a bit of an enigma… I’d had a really profound experience a couple of weeks before. I’d gone to see a Shamen (I know, right?!) because there were some issues in my past that had recently resurfaced and thrown me into a deep depression. The Shamen helped me to release the emotions that had been pulling me down, and helped me to get in touch with the different sides of my brain (the logical left and the emotional, experiential right). It was one of the most bizarre and most gratifying experiences of my life so far. The session itself felt very elucidating but the full effects of it didn’t really surface until a few days later, and I just kept feeling better and better over the next few weeks. I felt like I’d come alive, and that truly, and for the first time, I was able to think clearly, and actually inhabit my body as myself. It was revelatory.

That experience led me to seek more information about the right and left sides of the brain, and I became fascinated in particular by a TED talk (Jill Bolte Taylor's Powerful Stroke Of Insight) about a woman who’d had a stroke and had an incredibly profound experience as a result. The concept of having totally different life experiences, depending on what side of the brain you were in was, and still is, fascinating to me, mind-boggling in fact. So the lyrics are partly about that, about going to the right side of the brain to experience life through the senses instead of through rational thought on the left. It’s also partly about coming into your own, finally trusting in your instincts and fully believing in who you are. It’s also partly about losing myself in music. I think it means different things to whoever’s listening to it. It’s very open to me and means something different every time I sing it.

BEHIND THE VIDEO...

Filmed on: iPhone 5
Directed by: Heather
Edited by: Heather

Haha this was a funny one! Enter Heather (me, hello!), having never made any kind of video before, let alone a music video. At this point I was too self-conscious even to have Bryn filming me, so all of the filming for this was done with me setting up the shot, checking the frame, pressing record, and then running into position. It was quite hilarious!

I had a few ideas for things I wanted to try before I began - black and white lips singing close up, dancing in silhouette - but that was about it. The black and white lips was fairly straight forward and was filmed one morning before work. I looked into filming in silhouette and quickly realised that with my limited set up and location (ie, the flat!) this wasn’t going to be possible. The scenes that are in it are in it because they were possible to do!

The white wall, red hair, red lips scene? I was sat at the dining table before work, using the white wall as background, with our kitty Jem on my lap. The coloured make up? Sat on a stool in the living room, some sparkly scarves on the main curtain behind me, and again, kitty Jem on my lap the whole time! Bless her, if there was ever a horizontal surface available on a warm person she was on it like a shot!

There are sections in the video where there are crossed lines across the screen and also some hazy colours/sparkles. These are all close up shots of some of my scarves! And the place in the video is Croatia, all videos either from our drive up to Plitvice Lakes from Zadar or actually at the lakes.

This video came about pretty much by accident, with no real plan other than to make our first music video. I experimented with different techniques, some of which turned out well and some which will not be repeated. It looks lo-fi is because it is! But hey, I’d never made a video before so all in all, I think it’s ok!

Lyrics

Tenderly touch me, caress me with love, it surrounds me
As bodies we move in this rhythm as dancers collide
Tenderly touching me, feeling me, loving this body
As kisses rain down on me energy's giving me life

And we'll go
And we'll go

And we'll go
Right down to the place you know
You've seen before this place you know
We'll go right down to the place you know
It feels like home it's in your soul
We'll go
And we'll go

Tenderly touch me, caress me with loving, astound me
Bodies are moving as rhythm and dancing collide
Kisses rain down on me flooding my energy body
Softly enveloping senses in sweet paradise

And we'll go
Right down to the place you know
You've seen before this place you know
We'll go right down to the place you know
It feels like home, it's in your soul
We'll go

And we'll go
Kisses rain on me
And we'll go
Softly envelop me
