Bloomin ‘eck, 82 days on the road already!! That is pretty mad. I would love to say we are used to it now but surprisingly we’re still getting to grips with things! Not actually doing the practical stuff so much (you learn quite quickly the best ways to empty certain things and how long you can go between empties/refills, etc) but more when to do the practical stuff. It’s

Big Bertha! Los Picos

All the news from Day 23 to Day 29 of our travels - HUGE mountains, brushes with the Guardia, nearly getting stranded in the snow (again!) and some family chocolate?…

Day 23, Saturday 31st March

Potes, Picos de Europa - huge mountains!!

Yesterday we drove through the craziest roads… We met a man called Bryn (I know, right?!) at the campsite in Bilbao, and he recommended Los Picos, this huge mountain range. So here we came! The road is totally mental, just single carriageway right through the mountain valley - well, ravine more like, humongous mountains towering up either side of us, rocks jutting out into the road, quite a big overhang a lot of the time - getting a bit concerned that we would scrape Dixie while driving along! Fortunately not - phew! We stopped in a little town called Potes where there is a free camper stop. And the most incredible views! The little town is nestled in green pastures with these huge mountains rising up behind it… they look like their superimposed on the landscape or something, they look so unreal!

Oh and we were rudely awoken this morning! Our alarm went off at about 8:30 and we were just enjoying a nice snooze when all of a sudden there was a sharp rap on the door. Bryn was out of bed like a shot, pulling clothes on, and opened the door to find a Guardia officer there! He said a lot of stuff to Bryn which he didn’t understand, but gathered from his repeated gesturing towards the ramps under our front wheels that they were the problem. Ooops!Turns out that ramps constitute ‘camping behaviour’ which is not allowed (we didn’t know but a quick google search confirmed this)! We felt a bit uncomfortable after that and so we decided to leave quite quickly. Unfortunately I think perhaps in too much of a haste…

We had a quick breakfast and started to drive through the mountains southwards towards a town called Aguilar de Campoo, to get to an Área we’d found online. For the the first part of the drive we were still in the ‘Los Picos’ area, right through the mountains. We were driving higher and higher and the fuel range on the van was getting lower and lower… Before we knew it we were surrounded by snow! All of a sudden we’d gone from green, fertile, alpine-style country, into snow a few inches thick. And the road was still climbing… The range was still dropping… 70km, 60km,50km… then it changed to displaying no range at all - 0km?!? We were getting a bit worried now! There was nowhere to turn off… to go back would take at least an hour, and satnav said it was at least an hour to the nearest fuel stop… We were both having visions of being stranded in the mountains and having to walk to get help! Nooooo!!! We had no choice but to plough on. Still getting higher…

We knew we had to start going downhill at some point, but when? Fortunately we didn’t have to wait too much longer. And when we did start to go downhill finally, the range on Dixie said about 160km remaining. Thank f**k!! Lesson for the day? Make sure you have plenty of fuel before you start driving through a mountain range!!!

We arrived in Aguilar a little while later and promptly got more fuel. Got to the Área and spent most of the day on the music video. Man, what a ball ache video editing can be! Give me audio any day… The video is getting there though, finally!!

Day 24, Sunday 1st April

Stayed Aguilar de Campoo, Castille y León, Spain

Woke up - did exercises - boom! This has been missing the past few days. Today is about the music video mainly. Also a few other dull things… mainly promo stuff and goal planning, woop!

3 things happy about now?
  • I am healthy
  • My back/bum is healing
  • I am in Spain!
Looking forward to today?
  • Getting music video closer to completion!

Day 25, Monday 2nd April

Aguilar de Campoo, Castille y León, Spain

Today we will move. Not sure exactly where yet but heading westwards I think, towards Santiago de Compostela. Did exercises again - boom! Focusing on leg/back/hip mobility, with weights on ankles to try and help my injury repair and get stronger. Also doing some arm exercises. Successfully fasted yesterday - don’t think I’ve ever eaten so little on Easter Sunday! Quite refreshing actually!

Happy about right now?
  • Eating choco-banana porridge!
  • Drinking tea!

Day 26, Tuesday 3rd April

Astorga, Castille y León, Spain

Yesterday we drove to León. We were going there to use the internet at McDonalds today (as our mifi has run out) to send the promo pre-release emails for ‘Wake Up’. But no! Alas! - the Área in León was full! So we travelled 40 minutes further to the little town of Astorga. It’s pretty nice here! The Área is next to the bull ring - not so nice - but the town looks lovely, with some really interesting buildings and a Museo de Chocolate! Bryn now has more data on his phone so I think we will do the emails here and stay for a couple days.

3 things happy about now?
  • The sun is shining
  • We are living our dream!
  • There are little cheesy buns cooking in the oven! (not a euphemism!!)
Looking forward to?
  • Getting loads of promo done!
  • Guitar practice!
  • Working on new tune!

Day 27, Wednesday 4th April

Astorga, Castille y León, Spain

Got loads of promo done yesterday - woop! Sent to all DJs and Producers at Radio 1 & 6 Music who we thought might like it - 2 plays so far so that’s good! Today we are going to have a little look around Astorga and then head on to Ponferrada where there are two McDonalds - hopefully we can use the wifi at one and get more promo emails sent. Also need to get the video uploaded. Oh yeah - did exercises again!

3 things happy about now?
  • Doing exercises again every day
  • Cosy in our van!
  • 2 industry people played our tune!
Looking forward to today?
  • Wandering round Astorga
  • Guitar practice!
  • Seeing a new place!

Day 28, Thursday 5th April

Guitiriz, Galicia, Spain

Yesterday… how did we fit so much in?! Woke up in Astorga and had a wander around once we were up and ready. It’s such a pretty little town! The whole of the old town is up on a hill overlooking the plains on both sides. There is an incredibly ornate Cathedral and even a Gaudi building which is now El Museo del Camino (Museum about the Camino de Santiago, the route goes right through the town). Ooh and we noticed loads of chocolate shops and cake shops with the name ‘Alonso’ which was one of my Dad’s names (came from his mother). Maybe it’s my family tradition!?! Haha I can dream! We bought some awesome strawberry chocolate which was sooo good!! I’d happily spend a bit more time in Astorga… but duty and release schedule calls!

We got on the road to Ponferrada to go to the McDonalds and use the wifi. But no! We couldn’t get the signal in the car park! Bryn got another data boost so we did a little promo in the van and then drove on (Ponferrada didn’t seem like the right place to spend the night). So we drove on to Lugo. Quite a big town! There is an Área right in the centre. Also in the centre is a huge city wall (I presume the old town wall) with shops, etc, inside it. It looked cool! Sadly the Área wasn’t that great and Bryn didn’t feel too comfortable there. So we drove on to Guitiriz, a little village not far off the A6 road. Sweet little place! Área is nice, on the edge of town, surrounded by trees… very pretty (muy bonito). Would be nice to stay for a couple of nights methinks!

3 things happy about now?
  • We are in Galicia!
  • We are surrounded by trees and green
  • I am living on my own terms 🙂
Looking forward to today?
  • Getting a sh**load of promo done!
  • Guitar practice!
  • Little explore in Guitiriz

Day 29, Friday 6th April

Guitiriz, Galicia, Spain

‘Wake Up’ release day!

Yesterday was all about getting release stuff ready. Tunes online, social media ready to go, emails to blogs, codes on website, etc, etc. We did it! Got everything done. More to do today but that is the nature of the beast!

Today’s plan is to get the rest of the phase 1 promo emails/submissions done, as well as more social promo throughout the day. We can’t fill up our water here (tap is too big) so we’ll have to move as we are getting low. There’s a place about 30 minutes away that we’ll move to.

Ooh, the other thing yesterday, we got drunk! I got a bottle of €1.09 wine (about 97p!) and it was really nice!! It’s funny, Thursday night seems to be our drinking night?! Not sure why but it’s funny!

3 things happy about now?
  • ‘Wake Up’ is out in the world!
  • ‘Big Tune In My Room’ promoted it!
  • I’m drinking tea and eating choco-banana porridge in our little home in amongst some trees in Galicia! Feeling close to Dad (he was Spanish and loved Galicia 🙂 )
Looking forward to today?
  • Getting rest of promo done
  • Seeing another little village

BEHIND THE TRACK... The first part of ‘My Protection’ that came about was the soft marimba melody that opens the tune. We’d been messing around on various different vst’s, trying to come up with something ‘fun’ but not really getting anywhere. Bryn took a short break to hang out some washing (oh the joys of a home studio!) and I started messing around after finding the marimba instrument. Bryn

So we are now - quite a bit sooner than planned - back in the UK. It’s all a bit strange! I’ve really enjoyed not being able to understand the majority of the conversations around me. I’ve enjoyed the ‘bubble’ that this puts you in - if you can’t understand what people are saying, then you can’t really get sucked into the daily lives going on around you, which

BEHIND THE TRACK... ‘The Calling’ came about over a few sessions. We had quite a lot of the elements and I wrote the lyrics as the track was being built. We had these really strong chords that we liked a lot, but the way I was singing the lyrics wasn’t really working. I loved the words but I was singing them quite low, with not much intonation and the
