Advice For Van Dwellers and Why You Shouldn’t Visit National Trust Car Parks After Dark

Well it has now been nearly two months since we started living in a van full time. We have been up and down the country, visiting friends and family, and making up for lost time while we were in our DIY hermit phase (see previous post ‘Twas the week before Xmas’). We’ve driven through snow, rain, battering winds, across moorland and motorway, hill and valley. We’ve slept in car

Honestly, it’s taken a bit of time for us to fully understand the ‘why’ of this blog. Why are we doing it again? Oh yes, to document our journey. But what journey? Yes we are travelling - but it’s not supposed to be a travel blog. Yes we are living in a van - but it’s not supposed to be a van-life blog either. Hmmm…

Throw into the mix the fact that I (Heather) am a naturally introverted, quiet person, who hates to get things ‘wrong’ and therefore doesn’t really divulge anything much about her life to anyone unless she has already resolved it fully herself… well, it’s not the ideal set-up for writing about what’s unfolding in your life as it happens, knowing that some of what you are doing won’t turn out quite as intended.

But this is different. We are different. We HAVE to be different. We have quit our jobs. We have sold our home. We have bought a van. Why? Because we want to make our living doing something that we actually care about: making music. And the only way we could see to make that possible was to massively reduce our outgoings (sell home, buy van) and massively increase our available time (quit jobs).

But making money from making music, are we mad?! Well yes, if you’ve read anything about the music industry of the last 10 years you’ll know it’s not the most straightforward industry to make a living from (understatement perhaps??). But there are ways. And we already know quite a lot about the different ways that you can make money in the music industry - hell, I wrote a whole book about it at University - but we’ve never had the time to put any of it into practice before. Well, now is the time.

So this is where you will hear it first. Here we will share our musical journey as it happens, as we learn how to actually earn a living doing something we love. We’re going to get things wrong I’m sure. And I’m probably going to get really uncomfortable admitting that when it happens! But I’m sure we’re also going to get things right. Because I do fully believe that when you focus your energies on something 100%, incredible things can and do happen.

That’s it. This is our manifesto. We, Heather and Bryn, Bryn and Heather, The Love Tectonic, John Wulff (more on him in a later post!) hereby declare that one way or another, and for the rest of our lives, the majority of our income will come from the world of music. Woop, woop! And we will document our experiences here, so that anyone who wants to do a similar thing can hopefully find out what might work, what definitely doesn’t work and what definitely does work. And hopefully it’ll be an entertaining read too 🙂

Don’t worry, we’ll still include pretty pictures of beautiful places and fun anecdotes 🙂 That is after all the happy side-effect of travelling across Europe in a van at the same time!

The Calling Official Cover Art - The Love Tectonic
The Calling

BEHIND THE TRACK... ‘The Calling’ came about over a few sessions. We had quite a lot of the elements and I wrote the lyrics as the track was being built. We had these really strong chords that we liked a lot, but the way I was singing the lyrics wasn’t really working. I loved the...Continue reading

My Protection

BEHIND THE TRACK... The first part of ‘My Protection’ that came about was the soft marimba melody that opens the tune. We’d been messing around on various different vst’s, trying to come up with something ‘fun’ but not really getting anywhere. Bryn took a short break to hang out some washing (oh the joys of...Continue reading

To The Place

BEHIND THE TRACK... ‘To The Place’ was a great experience… The Love Tectonic had just come into being - we’d literally decided on the name about a week before in one of those late-night kitchen-table sessions with our friends Elijah & Ava, AKA The Gravity Drive. We were really excited about the new direction our...Continue reading

Wake Up

BEHIND THE TRACK... ‘Wake Up’ was a lot of fun to make. It was the first song written, recorded and mixed in our van! We had a music session in the van during which we came up with A LOT of ideas, far too many for one tune. We ended up being a bit overwhelmed...Continue reading

The Love Tectonic - Bring Your Army Official Cover Art
Bring Your Army

BEHIND THE TRACK... ‘Bring Your Army’ was fun to make! We knew we wanted something a bit more upbeat, more in your face and less introspective. It came together pretty quickly; the bouncy synth in the intro came first, then the bouncing bassline after the intro verse. By the time we’d gotten to the gravelly...Continue reading
